2011 Pumpkinman 70.3 Race Report

Posted in Uncategorized on September 26, 2011 by runlikehealth

What…..is…..up! Well it’s been 2 weeks since my race, and I have finally had time to process and record some thoughts about it. It was a fantastic event that far and away exceeded my expectations. Huge thank you to the Pumpkinman staff, volunteers, and RD for putting on a super top notch event. The race sold out a month in advance, and it is easy to understand why. They really put on a great event. I would also like to thank every single person who has supported me throughout this experience. All of your kind words and support did not go un-noticed. It really meant a lot to me. I would also like to thank my wife Natalie and my children for their constant support. Without that, none of this would be possible. I hope you enjoy this episode.

RLH Epi.41 The Crash! Kelownagurl Interview

Posted in Uncategorized on September 5, 2011 by runlikehealth

What…..is…..up! Welcome to episode 41 of the Runlikehealth podcast. I have a great show for you this week. I talk about the race that wasn’t meant to be. Hurricane Irene had other plans for the FireMan tri. The event was turned into a swim/run, and I decided not to go. Not because I didn’t want to, but mostly because I had my first significant bike accident about 2 days before the race. When it got to be the night before the race, I was still pretty sore so I backed out. I just didn’t want to aggravate anything with Pumpkinman 70.3 still in front of me. I also had a chance to sit down and chat with Barb, aka Kelownagurl from the Kelownagurl Tri’s podcast. It was awesome to chat with Barb as always.

RLH Epi.39 The Iron Girl From Caratunk

Posted in Uncategorized on August 8, 2011 by runlikehealth

What….is…..up! Welcome to episode 39 of the runlikehealth podcast. Thanks so much for listening to the show. This week, I give a training report right out of the good book. The actual log book that I right down (with a pen) all of my training workouts. It’s uber modern! Training is going well. Starting to hit some big mileage weeks leading up to my races. I was suppose to do an open water swim today, but the weather is less than favorable, so I will have to try to get outside this week. To the trainer I go.

I have an outstanding interview for you in this episode. Mandy, aka caratunkgirl, is a very inspiring person from the northern reaches of Maine. Mandy just finished her first Ironman in Lake Placid a few weeks ago. We talk about her race, her training leading up to the race and wardrobe malfunctions. Mandy had some really great insight to share on IM training. I hope you enjoy hearing the interview as much as I did doing the interview. You can find all of Mandy’s links below. Check out her blog. It is awesome!

Runlikehealth Epi. 37 Deconstructing Cravings, and Some Velo Talk

Posted in Uncategorized on June 5, 2011 by runlikehealth

What…..is…….up! Welcome to episode 37 of the runlikehealth podcast. In this episode I do a lengthy 2 week post marathon training update. Training is going well. I have transitioned well into full on 70.3 training. It’s odd, but in many ways I’m finding this training cycle much easier than marathon training. The intensity will pick up for sure, but it’s just overall a lot less impact on my body.

In this show, I have a big announcement that I’m very excited to share with you. I talk a little bit about deconstructing cravings, and I also answer some cycling questions from listener Bill.

This weeks iPod roulette submissions are from listener Tonya, as well as a live submission from Jeff over at the Reflective Runner podcast. Great stuff guys, Thanks.

Runlikehealth Epi.36 Race Week Audio Log, Sugarloaf 26.2 Recap

Posted in Uncategorized on May 19, 2011 by runlikehealth

What……is……..up! This installment of the runlikehealth podcast is produced in a little bit of a different format. Last week, I created an audio log of my thoughts, and what I was doing in the days and hours leading up to the Sugarloaf Marathon. I recorded a few minutes here and there through out the week. At the end, you’ll here a very nice voicemail from Megan the Vegan Running Mom, as well as a race report. It was a big day for me, as I bettered my previous marathon PR by nearly an hour. Thanks for downloading and listening to the show.

What….is…..up! I’m back….did you miss me? I had a bit of a hiatus there for a month. Life has been crazy. Training has been epic. Having the time of my life. 3 Weeks until Sugarloaf 26.2, and I’m feeling very dialed in.

In this weeks show, I have a very lengthy training report, a great interview with Jon from the Garden variety Tri podcast. I also talk about a product review I did on H2O Audio’s latest version of the Interval waterproof MP3 system. Check out that review here.

Product Review: H2O Audio’s Interval MP3 System

Posted in Uncategorized on April 17, 2011 by runlikehealth

I really like swimming…… a lot. I should probably say that I love swimming. I never thought those words would ever come out of my mouth. However, in the last year or so I have really come to embrace my inner aquatic being. With a 70.3 triathlon on the schedule, and training in an area of the country that is very cold in the winter, my love of swimming directly translates to hours in the pool. Staring down at that black line lap after lap and hour after hour. A serious case of black line fever is inevitable. But don’t despair. I have found the cure at last.

In the last few weeks, I have been using H2O Audio’s latest version of the Interval water proof MP3 system. This system, I thought to myself, could seriously transform my overall experience in the pool. I am happy to report that it did just that. Now instead of watching the big old lap clock at the edge of the pool, I am happily jamming away, lap after lap to whatever audible nugget suits my fancy that day. The latest version of the Interval works with the 4th generation of the iPod shuffle. Literally the size of a postage stamp. The system consists of a waterproof case with external buttons so you can operate the iPod from the outside. The earphones are integrated, and are completely waterproof.

So, I knew the new Interval system was on it’s way. I headed off to the store to pick up a new iPod shuffle generation 4. My first thought was that I was a little worried about how big the system would be knowing that it was going to be strung through my goggles on the back of my head. All of those worries were eliminated when I saw how big the shuffle was. This thing is literally the size of a large postage stamp. I knew that if the case was going to fit this little gem of technology inside, it was probably pretty small. As I suspected, my first impression upon it’s arrival was how compact it was. In the package I found the waterproof case with integrated headphones, along with several different size ear bud adapters. I would find out soon enough that these adapters are quite important.

I could not wait to load up the shuffle with awesome tunes, and dash off to the pool. I was a little unsure at first how the case would feel on the back of my head. I wasted no time. I strung the Interval through my goggle strap, hit play on the shuffle, and started my swim. First thing I noticed was that the drag on the earbud cords from the water was pulling them out of my ears a bit. No worries. simply looped the cord once around the goggle strap and voila! Problem solved. The next thing I noticed was that the ear buds were not fitting securely in my ear. They would tumble out after a lap or two, and the music was quite muffled. A ha! This is where the different size ear buds come in. I took the system home with me, and played around with the different size ear bud adapters to get a great custom fit. What’s really great is that if one ear canal is a little bigger or smaller than the other, this can be overcome with a different size in each ear. Totally customizable. My next trip to the pool was a total success. Ear buds stayed in. The sound was great considering I was cruising through the water. I can’t imagine doing the amount of pool work that I do with out the Interval system now. It really adds a new level to enjoyment both on hard interval and set sessions, as well as long slow endurance cruises.

Another H2O Audio product that I was able to try, was the hat that works with the Interval system. This is a perfect set up for those rainy running sessions that you simply must get in. The hat is made with a velcro strap on the back that holds the Interval system much like the goggle strap does. Having lost an iPod to a soggy long run, this is a very sweet addition to my running gear. I can’t tell you how many sets of ear buds I have lost to rain and sweat also. No longer. H2O Audio’s earphones are 100% waterproof.

In summary, I highly recommend H2O Audio’s latest Interval system for iPod shuffle generation 4. If you’re looking for an extremely versatile piece of gear for swimming and running, than this is perfect for you. At $99 dollars for the system (iPod is sold separate. I got mine for around $45) it’s tough to beat. The overall quality is very high, and the folks over at H2O Audio have great customer service. I really look forward to many years of rocking out in the pool.
